Why Seek Legal & Treatment Resources?

Connecting with both legal representation and treatment resources creates the best possible outcome. An experienced criminal defense attorney can navigate the legal system, access diversion programs, and present treatment participation as a mitigating factor. Meanwhile, addiction treatment addresses the root causes and demonstrates commitment to recovery, which courts often view favorably when considering sentencing alternatives.

Treatment as an Alternative to Incarceration

Drug Treatment Courts

Specialized court programs offering intensive treatment and supervision instead of prison for eligible defendants.

  • Comprehensive addiction treatment
  • Regular court monitoring
  • Case management services
  • Reduced/dismissed charges upon completion

Judicial Diversion Programs

For eligible first-time offenders, diversion allows defendants to complete treatment instead of facing conviction.

  • Available to first-time offenders
  • Deferred sentencing during treatment
  • Charges dismissed upon successful completion
  • No criminal record if completed

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

FDA-approved medications combined with counseling for opioid addiction (heroin, fentanyl).

  • Methadone, Buprenorphine, Naltrexone
  • Gold standard for opioid addiction
  • Reduces cravings and withdrawal
  • Significantly lowers overdose risk

Probation with Treatment

Courts may sentence defendants to probation with mandatory treatment conditions instead of jail time.

  • Common for first-time misdemeanors
  • Mandatory treatment attendance
  • Regular drug testing required
  • Violation can result in jail time

Why Choose Treatment?

Treatment Outcomes:

  • • 40-60% reduction in substance use
  • • Lower recidivism rates than incarceration
  • • Preserved employment and housing
  • • Family reunification support

Legal Benefits:

  • • Possible charge reduction/dismissal
  • • Avoid prison time
  • • Maintain professional licenses
  • • Reduced collateral consequences
