What Is a Professional Addiction Intervention?
A professional intervention is a carefully planned, guided process where family members and loved ones work with a trained interventionist to motivate someone struggling with addiction to accept help. Unlike informal conversations or ultimatums, professional interventions use structured, evidence-based methods that are both compassionate and effective.
On Long Island, our interventionists specialize in opioid, alcohol, and polysubstance cases — including the high-risk fentanyl and heroin situations that are increasingly common in Nassau and Suffolk County.
The ARISE Intervention Model
ARISE (A Relational Intervention Sequence for Engagement) is a research-validated approach that differs from confrontational models. It's invitational, respectful, and produces the highest engagement rates of any intervention method studied.
1Level 1: The First Call
The interventionist coaches the family on how to invite the individual to a meeting. Research shows 61% of people agree to enter treatment at this stage alone — before a formal intervention even occurs.
2Level 2: Family Meeting
The interventionist facilitates a structured family meeting. The individual is invited — not ambushed. The conversation focuses on love, concern, and specific treatment options. An additional 20% agree to treatment at this level.
3Level 3: Formal Intervention
If levels 1 and 2 haven't resulted in treatment engagement, the interventionist conducts a formal intervention with the full support network. Boundaries are established, treatment is arranged, and transportation is coordinated.
